<h2>Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) was founded as a branch unit of Southern University and Agricultural &amp; Mechanical College in Baton Rouge (SUBR) on September 4, 1956.</h2>

<p>On September 21, 1959, SUNO opened its doors on a 17-acre site located in historic Pontchartrain Park, a subdivision of primarily African American single-family residents in eastern New Orleans.</p>

<p>Established as an open community of learners, classes began with 158 freshmen, one building and a motivated faculty of 15. <a href="" target="_blank">The University</a> offered 10 courses in four academic disciplines: Humanities, Science, Social Science and Commerce.</p>

<h3>Today, SUNO serves as a beacon for those looking for educational advancement in an environment that provides the personal attention students need for success.</h3>

Here at SUNO we have expanded our scholarship opportunities to be able to reach all students who choose to continue their academic studies here at SUNO. We have five scholarship opportunities designed for all types of students. Whether you are a first-time freshman, transfer student, or out-of-state student we have an opportunity for you. All of our scholarships are merit-based, which means upon your admittance to the university and your enrollment is confirmed; you are automatically considered for a scholarship. No application is required.

<em>Applicants for admission to SUNO are reviewed based on their academic achievements during their time at an accredited high school or on GED scores as well as their scores on either the SAT or ACT examinations.  Southern University at New Orleans is a member of the Southern University System, the only system of publicly funded, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the nation.  It is mandated by the Louisiana Board of Regents that specific courses are required for any student that seeks admission to any school within the Southern System.</em>

<p>Any student who graduated from high school or received their GED and went on to attend a regionally accredited two-year or four-year post-secondary educational institution prior to their application to Southern University at New Orleans is considered a transfer student.</p>

<p>The following requirements must be met for transfer applicants seeking admission to any undergraduate program:</p>

<ul><li>Applicants must be in good standing academically and financially with the last institution attended.</li><li>Applicants must submit their final official transcripts from each college/university attended.*</li><li>Applicants must have a 2.0 Grade Point Average or higher.</li><li>Applicants must have earned a transferable Associate Degree or have earned a minimum of 18 credit hours.</li><li>Applicants with less than 18 credit hours must provide their official high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores.</li><li>Applicants must have taken and passed college-level English and Math coursework.</li><li>Applicants must have a transfer reference sheet sent directly from each college/university attended.</li><li>Applicants must provide a copy of their immunization record or submit a request for exemption (required for all admitted students prior to registration).</li><li>SUNO will only transfer courses in which the student has earned a grade of C or higher.</li></ul>
